The Vitra Aluminium Group was one of the most influential furniture designs of the twentieth century. The first model was developed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1958 for the private home of an art collector in Columbus, Indiana (USA). The designer couple abandoned the concept of the seat shell and went a different way. They worked with a panel of textile or leather stretched between two aluminium profiles, which made for a very elastic seat. Later followed the Softpad Group, with extra thick cushions for added comfort.
